Your licence and your devices

Activating, what a free copy does and does not do, and moving your licence to another computer.

Activating

A licence key is asked for on first launch. Paste it in and press Activate. The key is the credential — there is nothing else to sign into and no account to create.

A FEWD Studio licence covers two devices, so a desktop and a laptop are both accounted for without anything further.

If activation fails on Windows, it is almost always the firewall blocking the outbound connection. Windows setup has the fix.

Continuing for free

Continue for free → sits beside the key field, and a free copy is a real copy. It opens projects, edits HTML, CSS, JavaScript and globals, previews them live, uses the structure tree, the inspector, the styling panel, the assets panel, inserts and the project panel.

Five things ask for a licence:

  • Framework Mode — so Astro, .jsx, .tsx and .vue work
  • Extra panes — connecting more files than the five defaults
  • The terminal
  • Git commit and push
  • HTML Export

Everything else is open.

Seeing your licence

Preferences → Account shows the key, the device it is activated on, and when it was last checked.

The key is masked, showing only its last few characters, and Copy puts the whole key on the clipboard without displaying it. That is for the ordinary reason: a licence key on screen during a screen share is a licence key given away.

The key is stored encrypted by your operating system’s secure storage, and the app never holds it in readable form on screen. See Security in FEWD Studio.

Moving to another computer

Preferences → Account → Release this device frees the activation so the licence can be used somewhere else. You can activate the same machine again at any time afterwards.

Do this before wiping or selling a machine. Releasing from the machine itself is one click; recovering an activation from a computer you no longer have is a support email.

Keeping up to date

FEWD checks for new versions and can install them itself. See Updates.
